Elite Eight Teams: Louisville, Michigan Among Teams In 2013 NCAA Tournament Regional Finals

The field of 68 teams in the 2013 NCAA Tournament has been winnowed down to the Elite Eight. Sixty of the best college basketball teams in the nation, including the team that entered the tournament atop the AP poll, have been sent home. The eight teams remaining will play in four regional finals on Saturday and Sunday, with the winners advancing to the Final Four in Atlanta.

With wins on Thursday night, Marquette and Syracuse ensured that at least one Big East team would reach the Georgia Dome. Buzz Williams' Golden Eagles will attempt to solve the 2-3 zone defense of the Orange in the opening Elite Eight game on Saturday. The conference rivals tip off at 4:30 p.m. EST in Washington, DC in the East Region.

Another Big East team (for now), Louisville, is the only No. 1 seed to reach the regional finals. Rick Pitino's Cardinals held off the No. 12 Oregon Ducks on Friday night in the Sweet 16. The Cards will face Duke in Indianapolis on Sunday.

Here are the eight teams remaining and the roads they traveled to arrive at the regional finals.

  • SOUTH: No. 4 Michigan

<strong>Second Round:</strong> Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glenn Robinson III scored 21 points each as the Wolverines dropped 13-seeded South Dakota State, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/21/michigan-south-dakota-nate-wolters_n_2928663.html" target="_blank">71-56</a>. <strong>Third Round: </strong> No. 5 VCU was no match for Michigan. Dominant performances by Mitch McGary and Trey Burke solved the Havoc defense and the Wolverines advanced to the Sweet 16 with a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/23/michigan-vcu-blowout-ncaa-tournament-mcgary-burke_n_2940306.html" target="_blank">78-53 blowout</a> win. <strong>Sweet 16: </strong>Trey Burke shook off a slow start and rallied No. 4 Michigan past No. 1 Kansas. The sensational sophomore drained a game-tying three-point shot to force overtime and the Wolverines went on to win 87-85.

  • MIDWEST: No. 1 Louisville

<strong>Second Round:</strong> Rick Pitino's Cardinals completely overwhelmed No. 16 North Carolina A&T, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/21/louisville-north-carolina-at-ncaa-tournament_n_2928680.html" target="_blank">79-48</a>. <strong>Third Round: </strong> Russ Smith scored 27 points as Louisville topped No. 8 Colorado State <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/23/louisville-sweet-16-colorado-state-ncaa_n_2941352.html" target="_blank">82-56</a>. <strong>Sweet 16: </strong>No. 12 Oregon gave the Cardinals their first test of the tournament. Russ Smith scored 31 points as Louisville held off the Ducks for a 77-69 win.

  • EAST: No. 3 Marquette

<strong>Second Round:</strong> Vander Blue kept the Golden Eagles dancing with a game-winning shot against No. 14 Davidson with just one second left on the clock. Marquette inched by with a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/21/vander-blue-marquette-davidson_n_2927170.html?utm_hp_ref=sports" target="_blank">59-58 win to advance</a>. <strong>Third Round:</strong> In another thrilling finish, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/23/marquette-butler-ncaa-tournament-2013_n_2941847.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000003" target="_blank">Marquette topped Butler</a> 74-72. Vander Blue played the hero once again, recording 29 points. <strong>Sweet 16: </strong>After a pair of tense games, Marquette enjoyed its most comfortable win of the tournament. The Golden Eagles went ahead 29-16 at hafltime and held on for a 71-61 win over No. 2 Miami.

  • WEST: No. 9 Wichita State

<strong>Second Round:</strong> Carl Hall and Wichita State blew past Pitt in its second round matchup, 73-55. Tekele Cotton and the Shockers' defense held Pitt's leading scorer <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/21/wichita-state-pitt-ncaa-tournament-second-round_n_2926238.html" target="_blank">Tray Woodall to just two points</a>. Malcolm Armstead and Carl Hall led the way as Wichita State rolled to a 72-58 win.

  • EAST: No. 4 Syracuse

<strong>Second Round:</strong>?The Orange demolished No. 13 Montana, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/22/syracuse-montana-ncaa-tournament-81-34_n_2929599.html" target="_blank">81-34</a>, to advance to the third round. <strong>Third Round:</strong> In a game that Syracuse coach <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/24/syracuse-cal-ncaa-scores-2013_n_2942025.html?1364098606&utm_hp_ref=sports" target="_blank">Jim Boeheim described as "ugly,"</a> C.J. Fair scored 18 points as the Orange held off Cal, 66-60. <strong>Sweet 16: </strong>The Orange toppled No. 1 Indiana in the Sweet 16, 61-50. The Hoosiers could not solve Syracuse's 2-3 zone and produced a season-low point total.

  • WEST: No. 2 Ohio State

<strong>Second Round:</strong> Deshaun Thomas and Ohio State crushed Iona in a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/22/ohio-state-iona-ncaa-scores_n_2937085.html" target="_blank">95-70</a> second round blowout. Sam Thompson scored 20 points and racked up 10 rebounds for the Buckeyes. <strong>Third Round:</strong> Ohio State narrowly escaped an upset by Iowa State. Aaron Craft sank a game-winning 3-point shot with less than a seconds left <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/24/ohio-state-iowa-state-ncaa-scores_n_2945076.html" target="_blank">to propel Ohio State to the Sweet 16</a>. <strong>Sweet 16:</strong> With No. 6 Arizona seemingly determined not to let Aaron Craft hit another game-winning shot, LaQuinton Ross stepped up. His deep three-point shot lifted the Buckeyes to a 73-70 win.

  • SOUTH: No. 3 Florida

<strong>Second Round:</strong> Erik Murphy scored 18 points and Florida routed Northwestern State <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/22/florida-northwesten-state-ncaa-scores_n_2936954.html" target="_blank">79-47</a>. <strong>Third Round:</strong> Florida built a 21-point lead over Minnesota by halftime and rolled to a 78-64 win. <strong>Sweet 16: </strong>After falling behind Florida Gulf Coast University early, No. 2 Florida went on a 16-0 run to take control of the game before halftime. The Gators cruised to a 62-50 win.

  • MIDWEST: No. 2 Duke

<strong>Second Round: </strong>Despite a solid effort by the Great Danes of Albany, Duke avoided an early upset this year, winning 73-61. <strong>Third Round</strong>: Duke prevailed in a physical matchup with No. 7 Creighton, 66-50. <strong>Sweet 16: </strong>Seth Curry shot the Blue Devils past Michigan State in the Sweet 16. Curry scored 29 as No. 2 Duke won 71-61.

Dell opens window on efforts to sell company

(AP) ? Dell 's financial advisers tried to persuade 71 potential bidders to make an offer for the troubled personal computer maker before two of them emerged to challenge a proposed $24.4 billion deal with the company's founder, according to documents filed Friday.

The wide-ranging efforts to ignite a bidding contest for Dell Inc. are among the morsels of new information contained in a voluminous recitation of the events that have thrust the world's third largest PC maker on to the auction block.

The bidding has boiled down to a group led by company CEO Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners vying against separate alternative proposals submitted during the past week by buyout specialist Blackstone Group LP and billionaire investor Carl Icahn. The other potential suitors contacted by Dell's financial advisers weren't identified in Friday's disclosures.

For now Dell's board is standing behind its nearly two-month old agreement to sell the Round Rock, Texas, company to Michael Dell and Silver Lake for $24.4 billion, or $13.65 per share. But the board is still holding out the possibility that it might side with one of the offers from Blackstone or Icahn once they finalize their bids in the next few weeks. Blackstone has pledged to offer more than $14.65 per share for most of Dell Inc.'s outstanding stock while Icahn says he plans to pay $15 per share for up to 58 percent of the company's outstanding stock.

Dell hopes to complete a sale by Aug. 2, although it still hasn't even set a date for a shareholder meeting to approve whichever deal gets the board's final blessing.

Friday's regulatory filing provided Dell's board with its best chance yet to convince shareholders that it has gone to great lengths to ensure the company is sold for the highest possible price, given the challenges facing PC makers at a time sales of desktop and laptop machines have been declining as more people embrace smartphones and tablets.

Dell's disclosures underscored the bleak outlook in Friday's filing by including snapshots of internal financial projections that were lowered during the past eight months as the company's management and board came to grips with the depths of the PC downturn.

In July Dell's management presented a forecast calling for an operating profit of $5.6 billion on revenue of $66 billion in the current fiscal year ending in January 2014. After mulling a variety of information, Dell's board concluded the company is more likely to post an operating profit of $3 billion, a 46 percent decrease from the July prediction. The board is now planning for revenue of $56.5 billion for the current fiscal year, a 14 percent drop from the earlier forecast.

Michael Dell, the company's CEO and founder, believes he will be in a better position to engineer a turnaround if he doesn't have to cater to Wall Street's fixation on whether revenue and earnings are growing from one quarter to the next. That's why Dell would end its 25-year history as a publicly held company if its CEO's debt-laden proposal wins out. The deal would saddle Dell Inc. with more than $15 billion in debt, including a $2 billion loan from Microsoft Corp.

Blackstone and Michael Dell also have left open the possibility of working together, if Blackstone should end up in control of the company. Icahn hasn't indicated whether he would want to retain Michael Dell if his bid succeeds.

Michael Dell's deal is facing resistance from major shareholders who believe the sales price isn't high enough. Southeastern Asset Management, the company's second biggest shareholder after Michael Dell, contends Dell Inc. is worth nearly $24 per share. The Memphis, Tenn., firm had suggested that it work with Michael Dell on a buyout last June, according to Friday's filing.

A month after Southeastern floated the buyout idea, Michael Dell met with a Silver Lake representative at an industry conference and set up an August meeting to discuss how they might work together.

Silver Lake initially was competing against another unidentified buyout firm that dropped up of the bidding in early December. Silver Lake at first proposed paying $11.22 to $12.16 per share before finally settling on $13.65 per share after being prodded by Dell's board to raise its offer on several occasions, according to the company's filing.

After the deal with Michael Dell and Silver Lake was announced in early February, company adviser Evercore Partners contacted 67 different potential suitors and fielded unsolicited inquiries from four other parties, according to the filing. Only 11 of the potential bidders that spoke with Evercore were interested in exploring a deal. The documents didn't identify any of the other suitors besides Blackstone and Icahn.

To keep Blackstone at the negotiating table, Dell agreed to pay up to $25 million of the firm's expenses.

&#39;Rebuilding Together&#39; helps make one family&#39;s home more handicap ...

Rebuilding Together North Central Florida celebrated the completion of a community project in Alachua County to assist a local family with their handicapped son.

The project was dedicated to renovating the family home of Doris Tellado, Jose Jimenez and their two children Alejandro and Gabriel, who relies on a wheelchair for mobility.

RD Bonner, executive director of Rebuilding Together, said the organization focuses on repairing anything keeping a family from being safe or healthy in their home.

The family struggled to provide accessibility needs for their son and through this project those needs were addressed, he said. Tight corners and narrow doorways were widened, Bonner said, helping not only the son but the rest of the family.

Rebuilding Together partnered with Charles Perry Partners, Inc. to work on the project, which took about a year to complete, Bonner said.

A complete addition was built onto the family?s house, including a wheelchair-friendly bathroom and wheel tracks throughout the house for wheelchair accessibility.

?Through Charles Perry they were able to install a track system that has totally changed the lives of this family,? Bonner said. ?Gabriel can now get everywhere he needs to be safely, and we just feel great about that.?

Bonner said the project is part of a year-round effort to fill the need for home repair in North Central Florida, including several projects that are lined up for April. Community residents wanting to get involved are encouraged to visit Rebuilding Together?s website.

Look out squirrels: Leopards are new backyard wildlife

Friday, March 29, 2013

A new study led by WCS-India scientist Vidya Athreaya finds that certain landscapes of western India completely devoid of wilderness and with high human populations are crawling with a different kind of backyard wildlife: leopards.

The study found as many as five adult large carnivores, including leopards and striped hyenas, per 100 square kilometers (38 square miles), a density never before reported in a human-dominated landscape.

The study, called "Big Cats in Our Backyards," appeared in the March 6 edition of the journal PLoS One. Authors include: Vidya Athreya and Ullas Karanth of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Centre for Wildlife Studies in Bangalore; Morten Odden of Hedmark University College; John D. C. Linnell of the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research; and Jagdish Krishnaswamy of Asoka Trust for Research of Ecology in the Environment.

Using camera traps, the authors founds that leopards often ranged close to houses at night though remained largely undetected by the public. Despite this close proximity between leopards and people, there are few instances of attacks in this region. The authors also photographed rusty spotted cat, small Indian civet, Indian fox, jungle cat, jackal, mongoose ? and a variety of people from the local communities. The research took place in western Maharashtra, India.

"Human attacks by leopards were rare despite a potentially volatile situation considering that the leopard has been involved in serious conflict, including human deaths in adjoining areas," said big cat expert Ullas Karanth of WCS. "The results of our work push the frontiers of our understanding of the adaptability of both humans and wildlife to each other's presence."

The authors say that the findings show that conservationists must look outside of protected areas for a more holistic approach to safeguarding wildlife in a variety of landscapes.

Jobless claims rise, labor market still healing

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, but probably not enough to suggest the labor market recovery was taking a step back.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 16,000 to a seasonally adjusted 357,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Still, they remained in the middle of their range for this year.

The prior week's claims figure was revised to show 5,000 more applications than previously reported. Economists polled by Reuters had expected first-time applications last week to rise to 340,000.

Last week's report contained annual benchmark revisions to the series and the model used by the government to iron out seasonal fluctuations.

Last week's increase pushed claims above the 350,000 level for the first time since mid-February.

The four-week moving average for new claims, a better measure of labor market trends, rose 2,250 to 343,000, but remained below the 350,000 level.

That could offer hope job growth this month retained some of the momentum from February. Nonfarm payrolls increased 236,000 last month, with the unemployment rate falling to a four-year low of 7.7 percent.

Claims over the next several weeks will be watched closely for signs of layoffs related to $85 billion in government budget cuts known as the "sequester." So far, there is little sign the across-the-board spending cuts are affecting the job market.

A Labor Department analyst said no states had been estimated and there were no special factors influencing the report.

Claims, however, could become volatile in the coming weeks because of the early timing of Easter and spring breaks, which could throw off the so-called seasonal factor.

The labor market is being closely watched by the Federal Reserve, which last week said it would maintain its monthly $85 billion purchases of mortgage and Treasury bonds to foster faster job growth.

The number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid dropped 27,000 to 3.05 million in the week ended March 16. That was the lowest since June 2008.

The so-called continuing claims covered the period for the household survey from which the unemployment rate is derived.

Israeli Military Frets Cuts to US Military Aid -- News from Antiwar.com

As the Pentagon and US State Department continue to hype ?sequestration? and its minor cuts as the end of the world, Israeli officials are seeing it as primarily about them, fretting the prospect of cuts to the long-standing billions they get annually in military aid.

A lot of Israeli weapons programs would potentially be on the chopping block if a cut came along, since many of the schemes get dropped by Israel?s own military as inefficiently expensive only for the US to re-fund them and see Israel?s political leadership rebrand them as ?vital? parts of their arsenal.

Though the losses to Israel?s bottom line are likely to be minimal, if they happen at all. Even that has been hyped by Israel?s lobbyists in DC to the point of frenzy, which is sure to have many in Congress leaping into action to ?save? Israel from losing programs their own military didn?t see as worth paying for.

In the end this is helpful for both US hawks and Israel?s own, as they can mutually scare-monger about the prospect of losing programs of little real utility and convince Congress to exempt them from the cuts. Whether this will work remains to be seen, but historically Congress has caved in pretty quickly faced with such lobbying.

Hurley Town Board puts off casino gambling vote - DailyFreeman.com

HURLEY ? The Town Board has delayed a vote to support siting a casino in Wawarsing until the developer can provide a presentation.

A resolution to endorse putting a casino on the former Nevele resort property was tabled during a meeting Tuesday, when board members said they were reluctant to support having a project in another town that they wouldn?t want in their own.

?There are some things in this that just didn?t sit that well with me,? Councilwoman Janet Briggs said. ?I?m not sure I would appreciate Wawarsing saying we?d love this in our county but only if it was in Hurley.?

The request for support came from Michael Treanor, chief executive officer for resort owner Claremont Partners Limited, which is seeking to convert the former Nevele resort into a 452-room, 3.5 million-square-foot casino if state lawmakers designate the site for one of up to seven gaming facilities.

Hurley Town Supervisor Gary Bellows said developers are seeking to have the facility, which closed in 2009 and was subject to bankruptcy proceedings last year, to become operational if a state proposition allowing non-tribal gambling is placed on ballots in November.

?I think the state requires that the facility be up and running four months, I believe it is,? Bellows said. ?I think at this point (state lawmakers) are looking at three (casinos) ... below Albany. They feel that one would happen in the New York City area, one would happen at Monticello, and possibly one other.?

Councilman John Dittus said he is opposed to casino gambling based on his experience as a police officer.

?From experiences in my other life when I was in law enforcement for 32 years I don?t think gambling is the solution to our economic woes in New York state,? Dittus said. ?I think the state took a look at things like getting an automobile plant built here, heavy industry, things like that. Gambling brings with it unsavory characters, other crime is connected to gambling, and I don?t think it?s good for our future if you have to resort to gambling to make money.?

Bellows said the resort would also have family attractions while keeping money from leaving the county for casino gambling in other areas.

?It is going to be more of a family resort,? he said. ?It?s going to have water parks and have a lot of other entertainment for families.

Argentine illustrator wins child literature prize

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Argentine illustrator and writer Marisol Misenta, better known as Isol, won the 5 million kronor ($780,000) Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for children's literature on Tuesday for picture books that "vibrate with energy and explosive emotions," the prize jury said.

Isol has written and illustrated 10 children's books, starting with her 1997 debut "Vida de Perros" ("A Dog's Life"). She has also illustrated works by other authors, including Argentine poet Jorge Lujan and U.S. novelist Paul Auster.

Her illustrations have the feel of a child's drawings, which she says reflects her desire to show readers that it's OK to break the rules.

"The idea is to do something both artistic and fun, which breaks a bit from what's expected," she told The Associated Press. "I like playing with words, and surprising people. The fact is that any truly artistic work has this quality. I want my books to be fun for children and for adults, too."

The annual award ? the world's largest for children's literature ? is named after the late Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren, creator of the Pippi Longstocking book series.

Isol's work is "humorous with surprising twists, occasionally philosophical and always subtle," the prize committee said. "Isol is on the children's side, seeing the world through their eyes and exposing the absurdities of the adult world."

Isol told AP she's been able to make a living for about four years on the income from her books, but couldn't imagine what she would do with the prize money.

"I've never had a strategy based on earning money," she said. "I never count on things before having them. Only now can I begin to think about what to do."

The award will presented at a ceremony in Stockholm on May 27.

Imaging methodology reveals nano details not seen before: Understanding nanoparticles at atomic scale in 3-D could improve materials

Mar. 27, 2013 ? A team of scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Northwestern University has produced 3-D images and videos of a tiny platinum nanoparticle at atomic resolution that reveal new details of defects in nanomaterials that have not been seen before.

Prior to this work, scientists only had flat, two-dimensional images with which to view the arrangement of atoms. The new imaging methodology developed at UCLA and Northwestern will enable researchers to learn more about a material and its properties by viewing atoms from different angles and seeing how they are arranged in three dimensions.

The study will be published March 27 by the journal Nature.

The authors describe being able to see how the atoms of a platinum nanoparticle -- only 10 namometers in diameter -- are arranged in three dimensions. They also identify how the atoms are arranged around defects in the platinum nanoparticle.

Similar to how CT scans of the brain and body are done in a hospital, the scientists took images of a platinum nanoparticle from many different directions and then pieced the images together using a new method that improved the quality of the images.

This novel method is a combination of three techniques: scanning transmission electron microscopy, equally sloped tomography (EST) and three-dimensional Fourier filtering. Compared to conventional CT, the combined method produces much higher quality 3-D images and allows the direct visualization of atoms inside the platinum nanoparticle in three dimensions.

"Visualizing the arrangement of atoms in materials has played an important role in the evolution of modern science and technology," said Jianwei (John) Miao, who led the work. He is a professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA and a researcher with the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA.

"Our method allows the 3-D imaging of the local structures in materials at atomic resolution, and it is expected to find application in materials sciences, nanoscience, solid state physics and chemistry," he said.

"It turns out that there are details we can only see when we can look at materials in three dimensions," said co-author Laurence D. Marks, a professor of materials science and engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.

"We have had suspicions for a long time that there was more going on than we could see from the flat images we had," Marks said. "This work is the first demonstration that this is true at the atomic scale."

Nanotechnology expert Pulickel M. Ajayan, the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor of Engineering at Rice University complimented the research.

"This is the first instance where the three-dimensional structure of dislocations in nanoparticles has been directly revealed at atomic resolution," Ajayan said. "The elegant work demonstrates the power of electron tomography and leads to possibilities of directly correlating the structure of nanoparticles to properties, all in full 3-D view."

Defects can influence many properties of materials, and a technique for visualizing these structures at atomic resolution could lead to new insights beneficial to researchers in a wide range of fields.

"Much of what we know about how materials work, whether it is a catalyst in an automobile exhaust system or the display on a smartphone, has come from electron microscope images of how the atoms are arranged," Marks said. "This new imaging method will open up the atomic world of nanoparticles."

Copper Gazette: New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:??

New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,573,753 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped close to one foot this week, and is currently at 1010 ft. above sea level and 77 ft. from full.? Water temperature is warming daily with the average being 54-56 degrees and some parts of the lake 58-60 degrees in the afternoon. The lake is clear, to slightly stained with some debris floating on the surface.

Trout:?

Fair. The bite has been good for some anglers, and fair for most. The trout are scattered throughout the water column from the surface to 30 feet. Trolling anglers: try fishing the main lake near the dam/spillway and Rose Island. Uncle Larry's Spinners and Wedding Rings tipped with a chunk of crawler is a good presentation to start with. Try using various colors at various depths until you find what the fish want. Green and chartreuse are good springtime colors for trout. Bank anglers struggled a bit with very few limits being caught. ?Most of the fish that are being caught are planters, with an occasional larger holdover in the mix. There are fish rising to the surface in the mornings and evenings. Try using a bubble and a fly rig with a wooly bugger or a trolling fly to target these fish. ?Also try using Power Bait, Power Eggs, or a mallow/crawler combo. Another great way to catch them is with a live minnow fished under a slip-float. This rig is easy to use, and you can target many different depths. All you need is a bobber stop, slip-float, swivel, spit shot, and a mosquito hook. This is a great rig for kids because trout, bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish will eat live minnows.

Kokanee:?

Good. The fish are scattered from 20-50 feet. The fish are a good size for this time of the year- 12-14" and very chunky. Try fishing the main lake with a finesse trolling setup. ?A Glitterbugs pink Micro Hoochie or an Anglers Market Kokanee Bites trolled behind a small tear drop dodger is great way to get a limit. Watermelon and silver are two good colored dodgers to start with. Another lure that produces a lot of kok's and some large trout every year is an Apex. ?Don't forget to tip your lure with shoe peg corn that has been soaked in garlic, anise, carp spit, or kokanee special Pro Cure scent. ??

Bass:?

Good. ?The big ones are still showing up and more of the smaller easy to catch fish too. ?The giant fish are being caught on mainly jigs, worms, and swim baits. Try fishing main lake points leading into spawning areas. ?These are staging areas where the fish will stacked up before they spawn. Also it is a good time to use soft plastics such as Senkos, Brush Hogs, and lizards. These bait will catch their fair share of fish and will also produce an occasional lunker fish.?

This week local angler Alex Niapas caught and released a huge double -fish and almost a new lake record. ?His fish massive fish weighed 17-pounds, 13-ounces. He reported catching it in the morning on a California Reservoir Lures Bed-Wetter jig with a Slim Thrasher trailer.?

We have been seeing a lot of big spotted bass being caught and we possibly have a world record swimming around out there. ?The current state record and world record was caught May 3, 2001 out of Pine Flat Lake. It weighed 10-pounds, 4-ounces. ?If you catch a fish that is larger, and want it to be recognized as a state record, it must be weighed on a certified scale.? The post office or the grocery store meat department has a certified scale. ?It is very important to practice catch and release during the spring months!? If you do keep a bass, please keep the spotted bass and release the big female (largemouth) black bass.? Glory Hole Sports can teach you the difference, so you can practice good conservation of the species.

Catfish: ?

Melones catfish tend to be fish-eaters rather than bottom foragers, so use live minnows, frozen shad, mackerel, or anchovies for best success.? The water is warming and the bite will pick up.

Crappie: ?

Good.? Spring is here and the crappie bite is starting. The fish we are seeing are chunky slabs up to two pounds. There are fish in 15-40 foot of water, in the backs of creek channels near submerged timber.? Live minnows or red worms fished under a slip-float, with a bobber stop is a good way to target these fish. Also, try using Beetle Spins and mini jigs on light spinning tackle.?

Jimmy Fields of Manteca caught half a dozen very fat crappie in the back of a creek channel.??

The Regional Perinatal Centers of New York help fight ...

Friday, March 22, 2013, the?Regional Perinatal Centers of New York - a collaborative of 137 hospitals throughout NY who have met standards entitling them to this designation - held their annual nurses retreat at NY Presbyterian Hospital. Columbia PhD nursing candidate Joy Henderson RN, MSN, CPNP-PC, who currently manages this association, somehow found the time to organize and present a program that was an exceptional learning experience for representatives from these esteemed health care institutions.

It was honoring to open this gathering of nurse leaders with a talk about perinatal mood disorders and our need to identify depression throughout a woman's reproductive life. The constant nods and reactions from this group of dedicated professionals conveyed their experienced agreement.

Jane Ciaramella RN, MS presented her team's two year journey to implement screening and referral processes at White Plains Hospital - information that was eagerly received by the retreat participants. Jane has been educating, advocating and intervening for perinatal mental health for years! She shared a moving letter she had received from a woman who was so grateful to have had these services available to her - without which her birth experience could have been tragically different.

Mary Coughlin, RN, MS?whose company Caring Essentials hails from Boston (complete with a "wicked awesome" Boston accent!) gave a riveting presentation on opportunities to increase physical and mental health outcomes for newborns in the NICU.

These littlest and most vulnerable patients are taking in every nuance, sound, touch, and smell. Their developing brains are ever vigilant awaiting that tender touch, look, voice and interaction from mom and caregivers thought to be CRITICAL in optimization of healthy neurobiological development.

To reduce the potential trauma of being separated from mom and subjected to sometimes intrusive NICU interventions, Mary has some excellent suggestions for the nurses charged with their care.

Did you know that while 19th century physicians understood that babies experience pain, many of their mid 20th century counterparts rejected this idea!

Not until 1970-80's was it re-established that babies not only experience pain, but can be more sensitive to it than adults! Prior to the current practice of administration of anesthesia for invasive processes or sugery, babies had only one option to tolerate such procedures - disassociation or complete catatonic shutdown which sometimes led to death.? Perhaps this begins to explain an infant mortality rate that has taken decades to moderate.

With the renewed, indisputable knowledge provided by imaging and behavioral studies, research now proves that infants are exquisitely attuned to EVERYTHING in their environment and can develop symptoms of depression and dissociation when only weeks old.

Having a newborn who requires the services of the NICU has been associated with an increased risk for PPD. Up to 30 percent of families who go through this experience with their infants endure marital disruptions that can lead to separation and divorce.

The encouraging news is that there are many interventions which can moderate the potential emotionally and experientially traumatic effects of NICU stays for preemies and ill babies. Additionally, there are methods to support their visiting parents as they attempt to facilitiate critical bonding attachments in a life-saving, but unnatural healthcare environment.

The afternoon of the retreat was spent forming workgroups to address specific target areas where these interactions can be improved at their facilities. I left the meeting so thankful for the contributions of our colleagues, the dedicated nurses who are the outstanding front line managers of the birthing process and maternal mental health.

And of course, I brought a Jammies Jar with me to show the group this adorable product which helps fight postpartum depression. I encouraged them to consider offering Jammies in their hospital gift shops (and of course as a gift for the pregnant and new moms in their lives!) Jammies by Helene Laure last much longer than flowers and help raise funding for the kinds of programs and services that were the target of the day's discussions! There were plenty of "oohs and aahs" as the sweet little sample was passed around.

If you are planning a conference in the near future, I strongly suggest you contact Joy, Mary or Jane to present at your event. All of them are great speakers whose depth of knowledge and experience will galvanize your audience with crucial information. Thanks to Joy for a fantastic retreat!

Relative, lawyer defend Ga. teen baby-shooting suspects

Luis Santiago tries to comfort Sherry West at her apartment Friday, March 22, 2013, in Brunswick, Ga., the day after their 13-month-old son, Antonio Santiago, was shot and killed. West says she was walking her baby in his stroller when a teenage gunman demanding money shot the baby in the face and shot her in the leg. (AP Photo/Russ Bynum)

BRUNSWICK, Ga. ? The lawyer for one of the Georgia teenagers charged with murder in a baby's shooting said Monday his client is "absolutely" not guilty and the grandmother of the second suspect said her grandson would never be involved in such a crime.

"My client is absolutely, 1,000-percent not guilty," public defender Kevin Gough, who represents 17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins, told The Associated Press. He made the comments Monday, while preparing for Elkins' first court appearance on the murder charge.

Glynn County Detention Center/AP

This Friday, March 22, 2013 photo provided by the Glynn County Detention Center shows De'Marquise Elkins, 17, one of two teenagers arrested Friday and accused of fatally shooting a 13-month-old baby in the face and wounding his mother during their morning stroll in Brunswick, Ga. Elkins is charged as an adult with first-degree murder.

Elkins and 15-year-old Dominique Lang are charged in Thursday's shooting of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago who was in his stroller on a walk with his mother, Sherry West, who was also shot. Both suspects are charged as adults.

At a Monday hearing, Lang came into the courtroom shackled and wearing a baggy orange jumpsuit, The Florida Times-Union reported.

The teen glanced at the few members of the media allowed into the courtroom for the initial appearance as he shuffled to a lectern facing Glynn County Magistrate Tim Barton.

The magistrate told the boy he couldn't set a bond because only Superior Court judges can do so in murder cases.

"I'm going to see that you get a lawyer immediately," Barton said.

Lang was in the eighth grade at Glynn Middle School before his arrest, said Jim Weidhaas, a spokesman for the school system.

The teen's relatives said Lang would never get involved in such a crime. Lang's grandmother, Verdell Hunter, told WJXT-TV in Jacksvonville the boy is a baby himself, not a baby killer. A call to Hunter was not answered and it was unclear Monday night if the teen had an attorney.

Elkins was last a student in October 2011, when he left Ombudsman, an alternative school program, Weidhaas said.

Sherry West said she was walking home when two boys confronted her to try to rob her and one of them opened fire. Police say she was shot in the leg, and her baby was shot in face.

Gough said he has demanded a bond hearing and filed a request for a speedy trial for Elkins.

"We look forward to our day in court," he said.

West has said she picked the gunman out of a photo lineup of 24 mugshots and insists he killed her baby.

Erdogan says Israeli apology shows Turkey's new clout

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday an Israeli apology for the 2010 deaths of nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists that was brokered by U.S. President Barack Obama met Turkey's conditions and signaled its growing regional clout.

"We are entering a new period in both Turkey and the region," said Erdogan, who plans to visit the Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip, next month.

"We are at the beginning of a process of elevating Turkey to a position so that it will again have a say, initiative and power, as it did in the past."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a phone call on Friday, agreed to meet Turkey's three conditions for normalizing relations, Erdogan said, though Israel's steps stopped short of Turkey's calls to lifts its blockade of Gaza.

These were a clear apology, compensation to the victims' families and a relaxation of the Gaza blockade, Erdogan told a rally broadcast live from the western town of Eskisehir.

Israel bowed to a demand by Ankara to apologize formally for the deaths nearly three years ago aboard the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish vessel carrying humanitarian aid and challenging Israel's naval blockade of the Palestinian-run Gaza Strip.

The men died after Israeli marines stormed the ship.

The incident wrecked diplomatic ties between Turkey and Israel, once strategic partners.

Muslim Turkey expelled Israel's ambassador and froze military cooperation after a U.N. report into the incident released in September 2011 largely exonerated the Jewish state.

"I expressed that normalizing (relations), which will facilitate regional peace, would depend on these steps," Erdogan told reporters on the train to Eskisehir, CNN Turk said.

SYRIA

Reviving the relationship is seen as a key source of stability as the two countries and their Western allies confront civil war in Syria and the prospects of a nuclear-armed Iran.

Netanyahu, in a post on his Facebook page on Saturday, said deteriorating circumstances in Syria were a main factor behind his decision to resolve the crisis with Turkey.

He reiterated Israel's fears of Islamist militants seizing Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles and also entrenching themselves in areas near the Golan frontier with Israel.

"We are following what is going on there and are prepared to respond accordingly. It is important that Turkey and Israel which border on Syria can contact each other," he said.

Netanyahu said a visit by Obama who left Israel on Friday had "created a political opportunity to resolve the crisis".

The Turkish leader said Netanyahu had told him restrictions on consumer goods reaching Gaza and the West Bank would also be lifted and pledged to seek Turkish help in improving humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian territories.

Jury declines to impose death penalty in Puerto Rico murders

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) - A man convicted of killing eight people in a crowded bar in Puerto Rico was spared the death penalty and sentenced to life in prison on Saturday in only the fifth case in which prosecutors have sought capital punishment on the island.

The jury failed to reach a unanimous decision on a death sentence for Alexis Candelario Santana, 41, who was convicted by the same panel earlier this month for the so-called La Tombola killings of October 2009.

The death penalty is banned under Puerto Rico's constitution but applicable in certain federal cases. The island is U.S. territory and Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens.

Although there is strong opposition to the death penalty, crime has become a top public concern in Puerto Rico and the La Tombola killings were seen as particularly brazen and brutal. One of the people slain was a pregnant woman.

Candelario would have been the first person put to death in Puerto Rico since 1927 and the first under the federal death penalty statute.

He was convicted of being the mastermind and a participant of the shooting rampage, in which gunmen opened fire in the La Tombola bar in Toa Baja, a suburb west of San Juan.

Authorities said the shootings were retaliation against the bar owner, who had taken control of local drug sales when Candelario was in prison.

Candelario has been convicted for 10 other killings over the past decade in battles over the drug trade. Prosecutors say he has killed 22 people and attempted to kill another 19 in all.

His case marked the fifth time federal prosecutors sought and failed to get the death penalty imposed in Puerto Rico.

"I express my most profound respect to the jury for the decision it has taken. With it they have sustained the conviction of the Puerto Rican people that capital punishment should not be applied under any circumstances," Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla said in a statement.

The governor said he has asked U.S. Attorney Eric Holder not to certify any other federal case in Puerto Rico for the death penalty.

March 17 has always meant a lot to the Irish diaspora, particularly those who themselves had left the country seeking a better life abroad. It was a day to celebrate Irishness, to reminisce about home, and to stand together in solidarity. Public gatherings, and particularly parades, have always been part of the annual celebration of Irishness.

In recent years, though, St. Patrick's Day has come home: The Irish, the actual Irish in Ireland, now celebrate St. Patrick's Day with as much enthusiasm as their cousins in the US and Britain. Half a million people will take to the streets of Dublin today to watch the parade.

In fact, it's not just St. Patrick's Day, it's now a week-long?St. Patrick's Festival. Slick branding, float parades, giant green foam hands, buildings lit in green, fun fairs, stand-up comedy, and street performers: This is not how I remember things.

As a child in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the 1980s, St. Patrick's Day was little more than one of many days of religious observance. Church-goers went to church and wore shamrocks on their lapels, and Irish republicans paraded, much to the chagrin of pro-British unionists. My family was not religious so we didn't do much, though we did pin shamrocks to our jackets.

Later, but still a child, in the Republic of Ireland it was much the same, though the parades were less politically-charged state affairs.

In neither case did leprechaun hats, green beer, and the rest of the tidal wave of Paddywhackery feature. Of course, memory is notoriously?faulty, but I think it's unlikely I mistook pious Mass-goers with hard-partying fun-seekers. Difficult as it is to believe, in Ireland St. Patrick's Day was once a day of temperance, with the only overindulgence being in sugary-sweets as a kind of cheating break from severe Lenten fasting.

Reportedly things weren't much different in rural Ireland. My colleague Cian Ginty grew-up in Mayo in the west of Ireland and the parades he remembers were not slick affairs.

"Tractors. That's my memory of St Patrick's Day. You get tractors, or at least used to in parades in the country down here," he says.

It's not that I'm a killjoy. If people want to have a New York-style parade, floats and all, through Dublin and then head to an Irish pub, authentic or otherwise, it's no skin off my nose. Headlines such as St. Paddy's Day FAILS: Beer, Booze And Barfing?get on my nerves, but that's life. If I was to react to everything that irked me I'd have had an embolism years ago.

Nor am I a Catholic seeking a return to the true meaning of St. Patrick's Day. After all, what is the meaning of St. Patrick's Day? He didn't drive snakes out of Ireland and his explanation of the Trinity using a shamrock is a romantic fabrication from the eighteenth century.?Patrick the man, if his confession is anything to go by, cut a pious and stern figure, arguably closer to Protestant Rev. Ian Paisley than the green-festooned and cheery miter-wearing?bishop that we Irish tend to portray him as.

Bernie Whelan, second-generation Irish living in Britain, says she remembers when St. Patrick's Day had real meaning to the London Irish. Today, though, the Irish are just like everyone else.

?"The Irish community in North London has dispersed. I was an advice worker in the London Irish women's center in Stoke Newington until it closed. To be honest couldn't justify funding any more," she says.

As Ireland has modernized, the ongoing economic crisis notwithstanding, the idea of a unique Irish ethnicity has come to look increasingly threadbare. There is, no doubt, such a thing as Irish culture, but Ireland is also part of the modern, developed world and shares a universal culture with the rest of Europe, the US, and other countries. Irish identity, at least the version long defined by political oppression and poverty makes less sense than ever.

This hasn't stopped the marketing, though. In fact, the absence of bombs and bullets makes Irishness much easier to sell, abroad and at home, even if the beer-soaked mawkishness is now harder to explain. And so, on St. Patrick's Day we're told that everyone has a bit of Irish in them. Actually, they don't. Don't take it as an insult, it's just a fact. Besides, despite the attempt to turn Irishness into some kind of universal character trait, it's really just a nationality and, like all nationalities, means less than we tend to ascribe to it.

One thing, though: It's Paddy's day, not Patty. Patty is a female name, and don't start on the Patrick doesn't contain the letter "d". The Irish-language (Gaelic to you) P?draic does.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day if you like. Have fun. Just don't for a moment think it's authentic.

As for me? ?I'll be celebrating that we're just like everyone else.

Amazon Appstore celebrates its second year with free apps, cake for today only

Did the word free in the headline grab your attention, or was it the cake? Either way, Amazon's Appstore is throwing a party to mark its second birthday, and there's a goody bag of software for anyone who attends. It's been a good month for Android users, as Google's Play store had its own shindig recently, and like last year, Amazon's been treating Appstore patrons to discounts all week. For its official anniversary today, though, a tray-full of apps can be downloaded gratis. Admittedly, the selection isn't fantastic, but you should find one or two things worth at least the time it takes to click 'em -- Chu Chu Rocket, may we suggest (long live Dreamcast!). Remember, you've gotta be quick, as the offers expire at the end of the day. But enough from us. Head to the source link for cake and more.

Kerry sees Abbas and Netanyahu after Obama trip

(AP) ? U.S Secretary of State John Kerry met Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Saturday, following up on President Barack Obama's talks with each earlier in the week, but a return to negotiations did not appear to the main agenda item.

While making his first trip to Israel and the Palestinian Authority as president, Obama pressed for a resumption in peace talks between the two sides, but a U.S. statement released after Kerry's meetings with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not mention the matter at all. Instead, the four-sentence statement focused on an agreement between Israel and Turkey to normalize strained relations that Obama brokered on Friday.

The White House championed the rapprochement as a major success of Obama's trip, a view Kerry echoed.

"The reconciliation between Israel and Turkey is a very important development that will help advance the cause of peace and stability in the region," Kerry said in the statement. He said Netanyahu and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erodgan "deserve great credit for showing the leadership necessary to make this possible."

"As I discussed with Prime Minister Netanyahu this evening, this will help Israel meet the many challenges it faces in the region," Kerry said. "We look forward to an expeditious implementation of the agreement and the full normalization of relations so Israel and Turkey can work together to advance their common interests."

Once-strong ties between the Jewish state and NATO's only Muslim majority country have been badly strained since Israel's 2010 raid on a Turkish flotilla bound for Gaza that killed eight Turks. Israel had until Friday refused to apologize, drawing the ire of the Turks.

But with Obama listening in, Netanyahu called Erdogan from the tarmac of the airport in Tel Aviv on Friday to apologize for operational errors in the raid that led to the deaths. Erdogan accepted the apology and both said they would begin the work of restoring full relations.

Although Obama said that he had instructed Kerry to look into what would be needed to restart talks between Israelis and the Palestinians, Saturday's statement said nothing about peace talks. Nor did it even mention Kerry's Saturday meeting with Abbas, which took place in Amman, Jordan, before Kerry went to Jerusalem to see Netanyahu.

In Israel and the Palestinian Authority last week, Obama urged both sides to recognize the importance of restarting talks to end their decades-old conflict. But he rolled back earlier support for a Palestinian demand that Israel stop housing construction in disputed territory before negotiations begin. The new position has angered some in the Palestinian community who believe that Obama is biased in favor of Israel.
