Wildfire shatters record for largest in New Mexico

A wildfire burning in the Gila National Forest consumed nearly 20,000 more acres in a day and is now, by far, the largest blaze on record in New Mexico, a fire incident spokesman told msnbc.com.

"It's certainly not a record we're happy with," Gerry Perry said in reporting that aerial infrared readings last night led to a new count: 170,272 acres, or 265 square miles, burned -- up from 152,000 acres on Tuesday.

The Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire surpassed the 2011 Las Conchas Fire, which had been the largest on record in New Mexico at 157,000 acres. That blaze threatened property around Los Alamos National Laboratory, the nation's premier nuclear facility.

More than 1,200 firefighters and 12 helicopters from around the state are fighting the blaze.

Perry said continued extremely low humidity is making efforts against the fire difficult. The fire is at zero containment.

Two lightning-sparked fires merged last week to form the giant blaze, which has destroyed 12 cabins and seven small outbuildings.

One fire was first spotted May 9 and the second blaze was sparked May 16, but nearly all of the growth has come in recent days due to relentless winds. Officials also said a "record breaking dry air mass" and persistent drought in the region contributed to the fire's growth.

Those winds forced crews to the sidelines last week as the fire rapidly spread in an isolated area and charred several homes in the community of Willow Creek.

Evacuation orders for hundreds
Several hundred residents of Willow Creek and nearby Mogollon, a historic mining town, remain under evacuation.

Smoke has spread across New Mexico and parts of Arizona, putting cities as far away as Albuquerque under health alerts.

Perry said a shift in the winds Wednesday means that Las Cruces will probably see smoke soon.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., announced Tuesday that FEMA has approved New Mexico's request for fire management assistance declaration. Bingaman visited Reserve, N.M., Tuesday and was briefed by the U.S. Forest Service on the fire.

Under the declaration, the state is eligible for funding through the Fire Management Assistance Grant Program, which provides for the "mitigation, management, and control" of fires burning on publicly or privately owned forest or grasslands.

Also on Tuesday, Gov. Susana Martinez urged business affected by the fire to apply for low-interest Small Business Administration loans that could become available if enough applicants seek the help.

"As a result of this fire, small businesses are unquestionably feeling the impact, and I want to make sure that these businesses and their surrounding communities can take advantage of any assistance possible," Martinez said in a statement.

Dry and hot conditions in the Southwest have also fueled wildfires in other states, including Colorado. Hundreds of firefighters were at an 8-square-mile fire in western Colorado near that state's border with Utah, and a separate 4-square-mile blaze about 200 miles southwest of Denver.

Facepalm! Gore?s ?dirty energy = dirty weather? claims about the US are laughable in the context of other countries

Al Gore, is his usual incompetent persona, is bloviating weapons grade nonsense again.

A few prior examples: On TV, Earth?s core is millions of degrees, in AIT, snows of Mt. Kilimanjaro will gone due to global warming, except the snows are growing, and Gore?s 24? hours of Climate Reality ?high school science? that is so solid it has to be faked in post production.

Gore?s got a new schtick, he is now complaining about ?dirty energy? making ?dirty weather?.

From the Daily Caller there?s this:

Former Vice President Al Gore showed that he isn?t giving up on sounding the alarm on global warming and its catastrophic consequences in an appearance on Current TV?s ?The War Room with Jennifer Granholm? on Thursday.

Gore, who owns CurrentTV and appeared alongside former Obama administration ?green jobs czar? Van Jones, explained that ?dirty energy and dirty money? are thwarting a green economy. And that, according to the former vice president, is behind ?dirty weather? due to ?extreme climate events.?

?Let me add if I could briefly,? Gore said, ?As Van said, it?s the intersection of dirty energy and dirty money. And we can?t forget it?s creating dirty weather because the extreme climate events that the scientific community has been telling us are connected to global warming are getting worse. We had 12 events last year here in the U.S. that cost more than a billion dollars that were connected to climate. And it?s getting worse. And now, we have this extensive drought in big areas of the country, dramatic floods, stronger storms ? completely consistent with what people have been predicting.?

I just want to grab him by the collar and slap some sense into him, Three Stooges style -? Nyuck Nyuck Nyuck!

Gore?s claims about floods, storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, or any aspect of weather aren?t supported no matter how you look at it. I could go on and on, but this post right here says it all:

Why it seems that severe weather is ?getting worse? when the data shows otherwise ? a historical?perspective

Bouziotas et al. presented a paper at the EGU (PDF) and concluded:

Analysis of trends and of aggregated time series on climatic (30-year) scale does not indicate consistent trends worldwide. Despite common perception, in general, the detected trends are more negative (less intense floods in most recent years) than positive. Similarly, Svensson et al. (2005) and Di Baldassarre et al. (2010) did not find systematical change neither in flood increasing or decreasing numbers nor change in flood magnitudes in their analysis.

Be sure to follow the link and read the entire essay if you have not already.

Al is unable to separate the signal from the noise, because he himself is a noise generator. His detector is swamped. That, and its the next phase of keeping his gravy train alive with the help of the Rommulans and the McKibbenites. Get people to fear the weather and you?ve got a powerful tool to control people. They?ve been successful at spreading this disinformation, for example:

Interestingly, almost all of those hits in the first several pages talk about the USA and its ?dirty energy?. Gore himself focuses on the USA and its ?dirty energy?, ignoring the rest of the world, because that?s where he wants to change policy in his profit favor.

But if ?dirty energy = dirty weather? places like this should have terrible catastrophic weather, right?

No, that?s not the result of a volcanic eruption. Here?s another:

Yes, that?s snow under that soot. Nothing says Christmas like black snow. Have you guessed where this is yet?

You?re getting warmer:

Yep. Russia. Specifically?Prokopevsk. Prokopevsk is a coal mining city where boiler houses work all year around. It shows. Source: http://englishrussia.com/2012/04/09/dirty-dirty-prokopevsk/ There are many more shocking photos there.

So let?s look for severe ?dirty? weather connections in and around Prokopevsk. Should be easy to find right? Surely, as ex-Rommulan Brad Johnson (who made Vermin Supreme a household name with climate followers) asserts, there has to be divine payback for such dirty sins:

So, I searched for the obvious posited connection being pushed by Gore, Romm, McKibben, and Johnson. There were only a few results:

Of of them was this one, from Rommulan correspondent Dr. Jeff Masters, who I thought sure would be making a strong connection between dirty Prokopevsk and severe weather:

No such luck, it turned out to be an off-topic comment about some explosions heard in Prokopevsk:

http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=2035&page=4

And none of the other 234 results panned out either, there just doesn?t seem to be severe weather in Prokopevsk that I can find. But Al says ?dirty energy? equals ?dirty weather? in the context of severe weather, so unless dirty snow is severe weather, there seems to be none there. So I thought to myself, maybe I?m searching wrong, if severe weather is happening in that area due to the ?dirtiness? it might be better for an image based search. Surely there would be pictures of divine weather retribution like Brad Johnson says.

Nope. Just 13 images, none about severe weather in that area.

Of course all this is tongue in cheek, and just as ridiculous as the claims that Al Gore makes, or Romm makes, or McKibben makes. But, it does underscore one very important point.

Due to environmental regulations in the USA, you won?t find dirty snow of that scope, breadth, and magnitude in any USA city caused by coal-fired power plants. I?ve looked.

I grew up in a Midwestern town fueled by coal, we had coal furnace in our basement (like the house in the classic movie A Christmas Story), we had coal furnace at school, and a coal-fired power plant generating electricity in our town. Even before the first EPA regulations of the 70?s, our town never looked like that in winter. I?ve been unable to find any USA city today in the shadow of a coal-fired power plant that looks as bad as those scenes in?Prokopevsk in the winter. If there was, you can be sure the Gores, Rommulans, and McKibbenites would be sure to blast it everywhere.

But we have art to help visualize the problem. Gotta love the coal stains on the tops of the cooling towers. Obviously the artist has no idea about what cooling towers emit. Hint ? it isn?t soot filled smoke.

The design team at Dorothy in the UK has created a souvenir of environmental destruction. Their ?No Globes? are tongue-in-cheek snow globes that riff off the familiar tchotchke?s form while criticizing the dirty coal industry. The knickknack is a powerful- yet cute ? way of drawing attention to the worldwide problem of pollution caused by the burning of coal and fossil fuels.

In the USA, environmental regulation have done the job, but the enviros always want more.? Even the best environmental regulations in the world aren?t enough for them. When they succeed in shutting down every coal-fired power plant in the USA they?ll go after something else, probably natural gas fired power plants

One final note, I?ve been puzzling over this perennial hotspot in GISS over Russia for some time. From GISS, NOAA, GHCN and the odd Russian temperature anomaly ? ?It?s all?pipes!?

As most readers know by now, the problematic GISTEMP global temperature anomaly plot for October is heavily weighted by temperatures from weather stations in Russia.

gistemp_after_october_correction

GISTEMP 11-12-08

From that post:

?Posters at Watts Up have commented on the ongoing consistently high anomalous temperatures from Russia. I have noticed this too.? In light of the erroneously posted data for October, I took a look at the monthly NCDC climate reports back to January 2007.? By my eyeball estimate the results from Russia are almost all on the high side. .? Some I classified as very highs are massively high.? Of the 21 months reported, only 2 appeared to be below average.

?

I did find a study they posted that seems to point to a significant warm temperature anomaly in Russia during winters between 1961 to 1998:

ru_temp_anomaly

Fig. 1. Linear trend coefficient (days/10 years) in the series of days with abnormally high air temperatures in winter (December-February), 1961-1998.

From the Russian study they write:

For the winter period 1961-1998, most of the stations under considerations exhibit a tendency for fewer minimum temperature extremes. Maximum (in absolute value) coefficients of the linear trend were obtained in the south of the country and in eastern Yakutia.

?

Like in the USA, weather stations tend to be distributed according to population density, with the more populated western portion of Russia having more weather stations than the less populated eastern areas such as Siberia. To illustrate this, here is a plot of Russian Weather Station locations from the University of Melbourne:

russian_met_stations

With dark, dirty winter albedoes like we?ve seen in scenes in?Prokopevsk in the winter, I wonder if the temperature anomaly in Russia isn?t driven by soot on the ground?

I have not been able to locate a map of Russia?s coal-fired power plants, but if anyone knows of one, I?d be interested if you can leave a comment.

How To Make My Very Own Website

Article Directory :: Computers & Technology Articles

The process of how to make a website can be relatively easy, but it will still require a good deal of work and dedication from your end. After all, making your own website should be something that you feel passionately about, and this alone should get you to feel passionately about it. So without further ado, here are some tips on how to build your own website.

You can commit yourself to obtaining a website-constructing program and just do the whole process yourself. However, this is likely not your greatest option if you are uncertain about things such as your personal ability and your eye for design or if you want people to think of your website as professional and cutting edge.

Another way that you could go about this is simply by educating yourself with a programming language that is available to you. For example, HTML is a popular programming language that, to boot, is also quite easy to learn. Learning HTML will allow you to tweak your website just the way you want to, and you would get to save some money since you would not be paying anyone else to do it for you!

There are other examples of less popular programming languages, but as the years go by, even these ones are beginning to catch on in popularity.

For example, there is XHTML, which is a new web language that was established by the W3C's standards. This programming language is sort of similar to HTML, yet it adheres to a harsher group of rules when it comes to marking up information. The result for you who is trying to create your own website is a few minor changes in the way you have to write your website code.

Other programming languages deal with the interactivity of your webpages on your new website. For instance, JavaScript, which is nothing more than a browser-sided scripting language, lets you create webpages on your website that are totally interactive. This is something that you should look into as well if you want a really sharp-looking website.

Even WordPress, which is the personal blog website, is ideal for creating your website. It is a free application, which makes both organizing and updating your content quite simple.

As you can see, the process of how to make a website is something that you can handle all by yourself. However, it is a process that will be rewarding if you learn all about the various programming languages that you can use in your quest to make your own website. More and more people are today attempting to create their own websites because of the curiosity, the fun and the challenge factor that are all components of this process.

Romney's record at Bain Capital: Does it matter?

The issue will be the bane of our existence until November. Here it is only May ? and the back-and-forth over Mitt Romney?s career in private equity at Bain Capital is already as confused as Facebook?s initial stock offering. Buffeted by TV ads, web videos, feigned outraged and zigzagging Democrats, voters undoubtedly are stunned by the sudden outbreak of high-decibel arguments over Romney?s business career.

But do these even matter? Amongst the background noise emerges the real question: What parts of Romney?s business experience will inform his actions as president? That?s the key to what voters will want to evaluate, although finding the answer isn?t easy given the partisan spin spewing from both sides.
?
The brickbats began last week with Barack Obama?s first major ad buy of the campaign featuring a displaced steelworker calling Bain a vampire ?that sucked the life out of us.? A Romney response video asked, ?Have you had enough of President Obama?s attacks on free enterprise?? Newark?s Democratic Mayor Cory Booker was featured in the Romney ad because he described the blame-Bain game as ?nauseating? on ?Meet the Press.? Then Booker released his own video saying, in effect, that he was for the Obama attacks after he was against them. The Republicans came back with a video suggesting that the Obama campaign pressured Booker into recanting.

Next we had the pro-Obama SuperPAC ad ... nah, there is too much to summarize. But a few obvious questions spring to mind: Why in the midst of a presidential campaign do we care so much about what Booker, or any New Jersey mayor, thinks about private equity firms? How many campaign-issued web videos will it take to drive the political press corps bonkers? In the old days (around 2004), campaign admakers had to pull an all-nighter to put rapid-response TV spots on the air. Now it takes a junior press staffer maybe seven minutes to patch together a video. Is this really progress towards a more perfect democracy? And most importantly, how relevant is the Romney record at Bain Capital (and the $200-million-plus he made swapping companies) to his actually serving as president in 2013? Do the Bain years reveal that much about how a President Romney might react to a sputtering economy or a euro crisis?

Romney?s passionate responses to attacks on his business record during the Republican primaries seemed genuine rather than gimmicky. (For the most part, Romney lacks that essential political gift of faking sincerity). ?I will not apologize for being successful,? Romney declared during a late January debate in Florida. He quickly added, with awkward syntax, ?The nature of America is individuals pursuing their dreams don`t make everyone else poorer -- they help make us all better off. And so I?m not going to apologize for success or apologize for free enterprise.?

Beyond the three-cheers-for-capitalism rhetoric, three things unquestionably shaped Romney?s life: his Harvard MBA, his early years as a business consultant for Bain and his tenure at the helm of Bain Capital, the private equity spin-off from the firm. For all of Romney?s lionizing of the risk-taking visionaries of the business world, he was initially nervous about leaving the security of business consulting to start up Bain Capital. As Boston Globe reporters Michael Kranish and Scott Helman reveal in their biography The Real Romney, ?He didn?t want to risk his position, earnings and reputation on an experiment...Romney worried about the impact on his reputation if he proved unable to do the job.?

But Romney?s late-night brooding proved unnecessary. In financial terms, Bain Capital under Romney?s reign was wildly successful, averaging an 88-percent annual return over 15 years. Campaign spokesmen and hired-gun economists on both sides will wrangle eternally over Bain?s job-creation record from its investments in successful start-ups like Staples to closed-factory?gate failures like the Missouri steel mill featured in the initial Obama ad. But either way, this is retroactive score-keeping like ranking baseball teams based on hot-dog sales rather than games won. What mattered at Bain Capital was the bottom line. Everything else was an extraneous detail and, in the case of job loss, collateral damage.

This is who Romney is -- a portrait in business success rather than selfless altruism. Coming out of that experience, Romney?s underlying problem with voters appears to be his inability to make the imaginative leap to grasp how other people live. In late April, Romney urged Ohio college students to follow their dreams: ?Take a shot, go for it, take a risk. Get the education. Borrow money, if you have to, from your parents. Start a business.? These are laudable sentiments, except for one tin-ear detail: Most American families do not have a bankroll of, say, $50,000 or $100,000 sitting on the sidelines waiting to be loaned to the first child ready to launch a new business.

Bain is as substantive a part of Romney?s resume as Hollywood was for Ronald Reagan. Maybe more so, because in Romney?s case so much else is off-limits and air-brushed from his political history. Never mentioned by Republicans, for example, is Romney?s failed 1994 Senate campaign against Ted Kennedy in which he backed gun control, proposed tying the minimum wage to inflation and appeared at a fund-raiser for Planned Parenthood. That was another Mitt Romney in another century.

Despite Romney?s truth-stretching boast that he was a ?severely conservative? governor of Massachusetts, his record in office belies otherwise, inspiring a touch of forgetfulness. Never deliberately mentioned on the campaign trail is Romney?s non-partisan approach to appointing judges in Massachusetts. Or his long-standing support for abortion rights until he wrote in a 2005 Op-Ed (using an eerily Obama-esque choice of words) that his ?convictions have evolved and deepened on the issue.? And then there is that amnesiac detail about Massachusetts? first-in-the-nation law imposing a health-care mandate on state residents.

So what?s left? Romney does deserve credit for the success of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Of course, the Olympics had a budget of about $1.3 billion for the three years that Romney oversaw it. That three-year total is less than the federal government currently spends every three hours.

About the only thing else on Romney?s adult record is the six years that he has spent in the single-minded pursuit of the highest office. But to say that a major Romney qualification for the presidency is the years that he has spent running for the presidency is akin to Kim Kardashian (like Zsa Zsa Gabor before her) being famous for being famous.

This process of elimination inevitably leads back to Bain Capital. What matters is not Bain?s job-creation record but the values that Romney absorbed on the job. Romney?s belief in the creative destruction of capitalism, his conviction that a dynamic economy produces winners and, yes, losers would undoubtedly shape his presidency. That is his economic vision ? and it is directly linked to his years at Bain.

The problem, of course, is that this is not the kind of argument apt to pop in TV commercials in the heat of a presidential quest. Instead, the exaggerated Democratic attacks on Romney?s record in private equity are designed to make him seem like the 19th century landlord who throws widows and orphans into the cold on Christmas day. Small wonder that Obama said at Monday?s press conference that Romney?s Bain record is ?not a distraction? before adding, with a hint of malice, ?this is what this campaign is going to be about.?

So it is easy to conclude that, from now until November, the Bain refrain will play mainly in the Plains ? and everywhere else there are swing voters.

Diverted plane lands, no explosives found

A flight from Paris bound for Charlotte, N.C., was diverted to Maine on Tuesday after a passenger claimed to have a device surgically implanted inside her, sparking security concerns.

The woman, a French citizen whose name has not been released, was arrested after the plane landed in Bangor, Maine. Law enforcement officials conducted a search of the plane, concluding there were no explosives on board. According to US Airways, the flight left Bangor and arrived in Charlotte at 5:37 p.m. ET.

US Airways flight 787?which left Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport shortly after 11 a.m. local time en route to Charlotte Douglas International?was rerouted to Bangor. The Boeing 767 was carrying 179 passengers and a crew of nine, a spokesman for the airline said, confirming that there had been an unspecified "security issue."

A Homeland Security official told NBC News that the flight was diverted because a "passenger was acting suspiciously."

According to CNN, a French woman on the flight handed a note to a flight attendant, claiming that she had a surgically implanted device inside her.

Two F-15 fighter jets were scrambled from Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield, Mass., to intercept the flight over Canada, NORAD said. The plane landed safely in Bangor.

Doctors aboard the flight examined the woman and "saw no sign of recent scars," according to House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King's office.

The woman, a French citizen from Cameroon, had planned a 10-day visit to the United States, King's office added. She was traveling alone and had no checked baggage.

"[We are] aware of reports of a passenger who exhibited suspicious behavior during flight," the TSA said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution the flight was diverted to BGR where it was met by law enforcement."

According to one of the passengers, the flight crew announced that they needed to land in Bangor because "uncharacteristically strong headwinds" required the plane to refuel. Once the plane landed there, the pilot apologized to passengers, saying the TSA ordered him to lie to them.

Passengers were also told to keep their window shades down during a movie, so they did not see that fighter jets has been sent to escort the flight,? Stuart Frankel from Baltimore told the Associated Press. He also said there were a few calls for doctors on the flight, but that did not alarm anyone.

"We saw lots of police and federal customs people take a woman off the plane in handcuffs," Frankel said. "People were amazed at what was going on. We didn't know what was happening until we landed."

Several passengers said they did notice the woman because she kept walking up and down the aisle during the flight. They said she also stood out because of her slight stature and big eyelashes, according to the AP.

The FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting with the investigation, but officials told the network they did not believe it was a terrorist threat.

Airlines have been on heightened alert since last fall, when the Dept. of Homeland Security and FBI warned of new terrorist plots involving surgically implanted bombs.

It's not the first time a flight from Paris has been diverted to Bangor. In 2010, a Delta flight from Paris to Atlanta was diverted to Bangor after a man claimed to be carrying dynamite in his luggage. The man, Derek Stansberry, a 26-year-old Air Force veteran from Florida, was later found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Just last week, a US Airways flight from Maine to Philadelphia was interrupted when a man allegedly tried to enter the cockpit. That flight was diverted to Boston, and the man was arrested.

Childhood Obesity ? Are You Setting Your Child Up for Depression ...

Can you imagine your infant depressed? If you?ve ever experienced depression that?s not a thing you would want to consider. Depending on your household?s eating habits, you may be setting your infant up for just that.

Recent studies hold found a connection between obesity and abasement. It?s no surprise really. If you are obese, there are a count of factors to consider.

1. Your self estimate is low. No matter what you try to tell yourself, or others, you do not like the way you direct the eye.

2. Your energy is low. If you have battled abasement, you know it can be a struggle just to get out of bed. The same is real with obesity. Your energy can be low from want of nutrition.

3. If you are obese, you are probably not exercising 5-6 seasons a week as you should. Exercise is a natural abasement fighter. When you work up a sweat, you liberate endorphins which are your body?s of nature feel good chemical.

4. Your nourishing is poor. This is common sense. If you are overweight, you are apparently not eating what you should. Another way of expression that is ? you?re probably eating a lot of things you shouldn?t!

So how does this influence your child? In my state 1 out of every 3 children are overweight. Time they may not be battling depression YET, they are apparently experiencing some of the other symptoms mentioned higher than. So what can you do? You realize the path laid out for your infant and this is not what you want for them. You had envisioned so abundant more.

1. Start cooking the foods your household needs. Let your child cook through you. This teaches them how to make the straight kind of foods and it is a great bonding actual observation.

2. Exercise with your child. This doesn?t middle you should necessarily make them do step aerobics through you. Find something they enjoy and do it through them. Soccer, football, dance. Create sure time in front of the television is limited.

3. Do not recompense your child with food. Numerous of the habits we have today we formed years ago. How numerous times have you felt like corrosive junk food because you had a bad day?

4. Pack the seminary lunch. You might be amazed at what the seminary cafeteria is serving and what your infant is choosing! This doesn?t mean you hold to pack them a salad. There are large resources available on healthy meals your kids power of determination eat!

Your family can change. Showing your children the straight choices can affect generations to come!

Epson WorkForce 645 All-in-One

The Epson WorkForce 645 provides a solid feature set and good standard paper capacity as a small- or home-office inkjet multifunction printer (MFP). Its 30-sheet duplexing automatic document feeder (ADF), which lets you copy, scan, and fax two-sided documents, is unusual at its price point. It has decent speed, and its output quality?though overall a bit below par?is fine for most standard business uses.

The WorkForce 645 is a handsome unit, clad in matte and glossy black. It is reasonably compact for an MFP, measuring 8.9 by 17.6 by 14.2 inches (HWD) and weighing 15.6 pounds. Its tilt-up front panel contains a 2.5-inch non-touch color LCD, an alphanumeric keypad, and various buttons to control the four basic functions of Photo, Copy, Fax, and Scan. The 645 has a 250-sheet paper tray and an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. The scanner?s platen fits paper up to A4 size; you can scan at up to legal size using the ADF.

The 645 is compatible with Epson Connect Email Print; Epson assigns the printer its own email address, and you can email documents to it for automatic printout, even if you?re halfway around the world.

The WorkForce 645 provides WiFi and Ethernet as well as USB connectivity. I tested it over an Ethernet connection using a PC running Windows Vista.

Epson WorkForce 645 All-in-One

Print Speed

I timed the Epson WorkForce 645 on our business applications suite (using?QualityLogic's hardware and software) at an effective 4.0 pages per minute (ppm). This edges the Editors? Choice HP Officejet 6700 Premium ?($169.99 direct, 4 stars), which we timed at 3.4 ppm on the same tests, while matching the Editors? Choice Brother MFC-J825DW ?($150 street, 4 stars), which we also clocked at 4.0 ppm. The HP Officejet Pro 8600 ($199.99 direct, 4 stars) zipped through the same tests at 5.7 ppm.

The 645 averaged 1 minute 15 seconds to print out a 4-by-6 photo.

Output Quality

The WorkForce 645?s output quality was a bit below par overall, with slightly sub-par text, sub-par graphics, and photo quality on the low side of average. ?Text quality was fine for school and general business use, though I wouldn?t use it for documents like resumes in which you?re counting on its appearance to make a good impression.

Graphics quality was sub-par for an inkjet MFP. Banding, a regular pattern of thin lines of discoloration, was visible in many of the printouts, at times rising to the level of distraction. ?Most graphics showed dithering: graininess and, at times, visible dot patterns. Quality was okay for general business use, though I?d be hesitant to use the output for PowerPoint handouts.

The photo print quality was generally about what you?d expect from drugstore prints. Photos did well in showing detail in darker areas, but lighter areas looked a bit washed out in some cases. A monochrome print showed a modest tint.

Other Issues

Epson doesn?t quote cost per page figures for its printers, but based on their prices and yields for the most economical cartridges, it works out to 3.2 cents per monochrome page and 11.3 cents per color page. The cost per monochrome page is the same as for the HP Officejet 6700 Premium, while the HP?s color costs are 2.3 cents per page lower. You?d make up for the HP?s $20 higher price after printing less than 1,000 color pages with it, and everything beyond that would be savings. ?The HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One, with running costs of 1.6 cents per black-and-white page and $7.2 cents per color page, is priced $50 higher than the Epson but offers more dramatic cost savings over time.

The Epson WorkForce 645 has a solid feature set for a small-office MFP: good standard paper capacity plus an automatic duplexer; a duplexing ADF for copying, scanning, and faxing two-sided documents and a memory card reader (the HP Officejet 6700 Premium?s ADF is simplex only, and it lacks a card reader). Epson Connect Email Print, which lets you email documents to your printer for printout, is a nice touch. HP offers a similar service as part of its ePrint functionality, while the Editors? Choice HP 6700 Premium as well as the Officejet Pro 8600 add touch screens and can run HP?s Web apps. The WorkForce?s running costs are slightly higher than the 6700?s, and significantly higher than those of the Officejet Pro 8600. But it offers a good package and decent speed for its price, and better paper capacity than the Editors?Choice Brother MFC-J825DW. It?s well worth consideration by a micro or home office looking for a color inkjet MFP.

1 in 3 autistic young adults lack jobs, education

In this March 2011 photo provided by Jeff Martin, Ian Wells sits on a bicycle in North Hanover, N.J. Wells, 21, of Allentown, N.J., has autism and has had trouble finding paid employment. A study being published Monday in Pediatrics says 1 in 3 young adults with autism have no jobs or college or technical school education nearly seven years after high school, and fare worse than those with other disabilities. (AP Photo/Courtesy of Jeff Martin)

(AP) ? One in 3 young adults with autism have no paid job experience, college or technical schooling nearly seven years after high school graduation, a study finds. That's a poorer showing than those with other disabilities including those who are mentally disabled, the researchers said.

With roughly half a million autistic kids reaching adulthood in the next decade, experts say it's an issue policymakers urgently need to address.

The study was done well before unemployment peaked from the recession. The situation today is tough even for young adults who don't have such limitations.

Ian Wells of Allentown, N.J., is 21, autistic and won't graduate from high school until next year. He is unlikely to attend college because of his autism. He wants a job but has only found unpaid internships and is currently working part-time and unpaid as a worker at a fastener factory.

He's a hard worker, with good mechanical skills, but has trouble reading and speaking, said his mother, Barbara Wells. She said his difficulties understanding social cues and body language can make other people uncomfortable.

"I'm very afraid" about his prospects for ever finding long-term employment, she said. "It keeps me up at night."

The study, published online Monday in Pediatrics, was based on data from 2007-08. It found that within two years of leaving high school, more than half of those with autism had no job experience, college or technical education.

Things improved as they got older. Yet nearly seven years after high school, 35 percent of autistic young adults still had no paid employment or education beyond high school.

Those figures compare with 26 percent of mentally disabled young adults, 7 percent of young adults with speech and language problems, and 3 percent of those with learning disabilities.

Those with autism may fare worse because many also have each of the other disabilities studied.

The researchers analyzed data from a national study of kids receiving special education services, prepared for the U.S. Department of Education. About 2,000 young adults with one of four types of disabilities were involved, including 500 with autism.

It's the largest study to date on the topic and the results "are quite a cause for concern," said lead author Paul Shattuck, an assistant professor at Washington University's Brown School of Social Work in St. Louis.

"There is this wave of young children who have been diagnosed with autism who are aging toward adulthood. We're kind of setting ourselves up for a scary situation if we don't think about that and how we're going to help these folks and their families," Shattuck said.

Government data suggest that 1 in 88 U.S. kids have autism and there's evidence that the rate is rising.

Within the next 10 years, more than 500,000 kids with autism will reach adulthood, said Peter Bell, vice president for programs and services at Autism Speaks, an advocacy group that helped pay for the study.

"It's a huge, huge issue," Bell said. "Unfortunately there are many families that really struggle to understand what that transition ultimately entails. ...They face the reality of having a child who may potentially not be able to have enough services to keep them busy during the day."

"It's only going to get worse ..." Bell said.

His own 19-year-old son has autism and is being home-schooled and Bell has hired therapists to prepare him for jobs and other life skills.

Carol Schall, a special education policy specialist, said the results confirm smaller studies showing difficulties facing kids with autism as they transition into adulthood, and also highlight a need for better job training services offered in public schools for special education students.

She is involved in research at Virginia Commonwealth University investigating whether on-the-job training and teaching social cues to high school students with autism makes them more employable.

Kids are taught a range of practical skills and appropriate behavior. "It takes a much higher degree of intensity for them to learn skills" than for other kids, she said.

Preliminary results show this training has helped kids with autism find and keep jobs, she said.

Best Buy founder / chairman steps down after investigation

Image

Yet more fallout in the case of Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn's sudden resignation last month. Some more light has been shed on those aforementioned "certain issues" we heard about, and now an internal investigation has led to the exit of the big box retailer's founder Richard Schulze as chairman of the board. Schulze will be replaced by Hatim Tyabji, who has served as the CEO of Bytemobile and as chairman of the Best Buy's audit committee. The transfer will occur after the company's annual meeting on June 21, 2012. Tyabji had the following to say about Schulze's tenure with the company,

Dick's leadership and vision changed the landscape of American retail, and he will forever be remembered as an iconic entrepreneur. We join Best Buy's 167,000 employees in thanking him.

More details on Schulze's exit can be found in an official Best Buy statement after the break.

The picture follows the rule of thirds, holds a nice level line, and above all else -- is a great picture. Congrats templon, and thanks for the great photo! Check your inbox for information about your Beats Tour headphones, we'll need to know where to have them sent.

As usual, there were plenty of great pictures this week. It really is difficult sorting out the best few, but as someone who enjoys looking at photographs, I'm not complaining. Hit the break to see the honorable mention list.  And be ready to do it all over again next week.
