Issaquah announced it?s green townhomes are now essentially completed and ready for tours and contracts for future purchase. The zHome project is a 10-unit townhome development that uses environmentally-friendly designs and new energy-saving technologies. The townhomes will use 60% less water, have net zero carbon emissions and have cleaner indoor air as they are constructed with the lowest possible toxicity materials.
It?s been a long road for the Issaquah Highlands project which began in 2008. Started by the City of Issaquah (on vacant land which the city controlled) and a building partner, the project was to build environmentally friendly townhomes for living green in the Issaquah Highlands. It was hoped that the townhomes would be a model of environmentally friendly building techniques and help propel Issaquah to the forefront of green-building technology.? Unfortunately, the timing wasn?t right as the housing slump hit shortly after ground-breaking and the project was placed on hold.
However, fast-forward to today and it?s a different story. After going through several different developers and builders, the second largest homebuilder in Japan, Ichijo, joined with the city and developers to complete the project. The Japanese builder joined the project as it desired to enter the U.S. market and expand it?s participation with an ?aggressively green? project. Other partners on the zHome project include Seattle builder Matt Howland, King County, Built Green, Port Blakely Communities, Puget Sound Energy and the Washington State University Energy Program.
According to press reports, the net zero energy ten townhome complex in Issaquah has cost about five million dollars to build. The ten units range in size from 800 to 1,750 square feet of living space with one to three bedrooms, depending on the unit. The units are expected to go on the market for between four and six hundred thousand dollars.
Interested buyers, real estate agents or just those that desire to see and learn what building green means are encouraged to visit the project. The project is available for tours on Saturdays from 10-5 and Sundays 11-5 from September 17 until October 30th. The guided tours will begin every thirty minutes starting at the top and bottom of the hour. To get to the green townhomes project in the Issaquah Highlands, take exit 18 on I-90 and head north on Highlands Drive and look for the homes with the solar panels.
